Joints that are being repointed need to be ground out or chiseled a minimum of twice as deep as the mortar joint is tall, or they will deteriorate far too early. Sadly, there are masonry companies that may even do as little as a third of that depth. Grinding out shallow saves on blades and labor. There is also less mortar going back in.
